TAG Heuer

The Face
All TAG Heuer watches use Sapphire Crystal for the face, an expensive, high quality material which is highly resistant to scratching. Many fakes will simply use glass for the face. A way of identifying whether you have a fake or not, is to smear a small amount of water across the face. If the water pulls together into larger droplets, you have a genuine watch. If the water sticks in its position, you have a fake. The pulling together occurs because of the incredible smoothness of sapphire crystal. The glass face of a fake will be covered in thousands of tiny scratches, which hold onto the water and do not allow it to pull together.
The Links
A genuine TAG Heuer watch from the ‘Link’ line will have links which are actually two pieces of metal. You can confirm this by looking at either side of the link and looking for a seam on both sides. Many fakes will simply etch a seam into one side, to give the impression that there are two halves to the link. Furthermore, the links should be relatively heavy, as they will be solid metal on a genuine TAG Heuer. Fakes will use hollow metals to cut costs, but this sacrifices weight.
The Buttons
Many complex TAG Heuer Chronographs will have more buttons than the usual winder found on most watches. A genuine TAG Heuer Chronograph will have buttons which actually have a function - often controlling the smaller dials on the face of the watch. On a fake Chronograph, these buttons will either do nothing at all, or will serve a useless purpose, such as spinning the second hand around 360°.
The Design
A large number of fake TAG Heuer watches are not actually copies; they are simply designs made up by the counterfeiter, for ease of production. You should therefore check that your watch is listed on the TAG Heuer site, and that all the features are identical to the official model.
Durability
TAG Heuer watches are carefully built by experienced craftsmen, and are expensive for a reason. Your watch should not begin to fall apart after a few weeks of wear. A genuine TAG Heuer should last a lifetime. Be very skeptical if parts begin to break or come loose on your watch.
Dust
The climate at the TAG Heuer factory in Switzerland is carefully controlled; there is absolutely no dust in the air whatsoever. Therefore, there is nothing inside the inner workings of the watch to clog up the parts and break it, nor should there be any particles inside the face of the watch. If you can see dust particles sitting on the face of your watch, you certainly have a fake.
