The Caseback
On many expensive watches, the back of the casing will be transparent, so that the interior workings of the watch are easy to see. However, Rolex have never incorporated a skeleton caseback into any of their designs, and so if your Rolex has this, it is a fake.
The Magnification Bubble
Authentic Rolex watches will have a bubble in the crystal face, which magnifies the date and makes it easier to read for the wearer. It offers 2.5 times magnification of the number. Fake Rolex watches will often have a bubble which is off centre, or does not offer the correct level of magnification.
The Etching
Authentic Rolex watches should have a miniscule Rolex Crown logo etched into the Sapphire Crystal of the face, just below the six o’clock point of the face. It is very difficult to notice with the naked eye, but the attention to detail is obvious under high magnification. Counterfeiters find it very difficult to replicate this detail, and thus it is rarely found on a fake Rolex.
The Sticker
Authentic Rolex watches will come with a sticker on the caseback, which will have a hologram on it, to prevent against counterfeiting. On most fakes, this sticker will simply have a pattern which does not change as the light hits it. This is an obvious sign of a fake. Furthermore, if your watch does not come with a sticker, it is likely to be a fake.
The Weight
Genuine Rolex watches should feel quite heavy, as there are thousands of parts whirring away inside the casing. A fake Rolex will use a very basic movement inside the watch, which is usually very lightweight, and so the watch will not feel heavy at all. The links on fake Rolex watches tend to be hollow, to cut costs, whereas on the genuine model, they are usually solid metal.
The Second Hand
Authentic Rolex watches have a sweeping second hand, which means that the hand moves in very small increments, giving the impression that it never stops. Most fakes will not be able to replicate this, and the movement of the second hand will be jerky and inconsistent.
The Lettering
The lettering on the face of a genuine Rolex watch should be absolutely perfect, with no rough edges, or smudging. Many fake watches are made quickly through careless production processes, which leads to poor quality. Rolex watches are carefully built, and any watch which isn’t absolutely perfect will never leave the factory in Switzerland.
