The Leather
Hermès belts are made from only the highest quality calf leather, which will have a gorgeous leather smell, and will be soft and smooth to the touch. The Buckle

The buckle will be stamped with the Hermès logo, and you should check whether there is an accent on the second E. If this accent is missing, you certainly have a fake belt. Hermès would never allow such a mistake to pass the strict quality control requirements at its factory.
The Stitching
The Stitching on an authentic Hermès belt will be absolutely perfect; arrow straight, with no nicks or imperfections when it is fresh out of the box. It is also highly unlikely that the thread will come loose - these belts are expensive, and built to last a lifetime. You wouldn’t expect any less from Hermès.
The Box
Genuine Hermès belts will always be packaged in an orange box, printed with a very high quality image of the Hermès chariot. If the image is blurry or pixelated, then you have a fake. The box will be sealed with a black ribbon, with the Hermès logo repeated along its length. When buying from sites such as eBay, be very weary if the belt does not come with its original packaging.
